John M. Leonard, M.D.

Abbott

Dr. John Leonard is senior vice president, Pharmaceuticals, Research and Development. He was appointed to his current position in March 2008. Previously, he served as vice president, Global Pharmaceutical Research and Development.

Leonard joined Abbott in 1992 as head of antiviral drug development where he was responsible for the clinical development of Abbott's protease inhibitors. He held several positions of increasing responsibility in the pharmaceutical R&D organization.

Prior to joining Abbott, Leonard was senior director for clinical research at G.H. Besselaar Associates in Princeton, N.J.

Leonard is a member of many professional groups, including the American Society of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He serves on the science and regulatory affairs committees of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturing Association (PhRMA), and is on the board of directors of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) and the National Association for Biomedical Research (NABR).

Leonard completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at StanfordUniversityHospital followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in molecular virology at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. He is board certified in internal medicine and is licensed to practice in Illinois and Maryland.

He earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a doctorate in medicine from JohnsHopkinsUniversity in Baltimore.
