Dr. Mezzanotte has worked at AstraZeneca for over 12 years, assuming roles of increasing leadership and management responsibility in clinical research and development across multiple therapeutic areas. His current role is the Vice-President, Global Products Leadership, responsible for later stage development in the metabolic, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, respiratory and rheumatologic therapy areas. From 2007-2010, he was the Vice-President/Global Product Director for Dapagliflozin, a novel SGLT2 inhibitor for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. This project has been a worldwide collaboration with Bristol Myers Squibb for the joint development, registration and commercialization of dapagliflozin. The clinical program has completed phase III and is under regulatory review in the US and Europe while still ongoing across Asia.
Previously, he served as US Development leader for Emerging Brands with U.S. responsibility for pre-launch projects across all therapeutic areas. Prior to that, he led the successful US clinical development program for the combination product Symbicort pMDI and has also led numerous other NDA and sNDA submissions including Pulmicort Respules and Pulmicort Easyhaler. During his career at AZ, he has been known for finding creative and effective solutions to challenging development obstacles, for developing people and for working collaboratively with colleagues around the world.
Prior to joining AstraZeneca, Dr. Mezzanotte developed and ran both a multispecialty sleep disorders center and a pulmonary diagnostics and interventional bronchoscopy laboratory as part of a multidimensional Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine practice. He also spent several years on faculty at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, the Denver Veterans Administration Medical Center and National Jewish Hospital for Respiratory Medicine.
Dr. Mezzanotte has an undergraduate degree from Villanova University and obtained his MD at the University of Pennsylvania and MPH from Johns Hopkins University. He completed a Residency and Chief Residency in Internal Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and a Pulmonary/Critical Care/Sleep Medicine Fellowship at the University of Colorado. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine and sleep medicine.
